An image from the M&S Bridal Range With the average wedding dress costing over £800, it used to be the most expensive clothing purchase of a woman's life. Not any more. Marks & Spencer has unveiled its' wedding range of 12 dresses in hues of cream, champagne and white costing as little as £89.

The chain is following in the footsteps of rivals such as H&M, Monsoon and Asda by allowing women to pick up what used to be one of the most difficult and priciest purchases of their lives for a fraction of the usual cost.

With many couples taking out huge joint mortgages, not to mention all the other wedding costs, many brides are rethinking their priorities.

M&S said it was responding to demand from shoppers in launching its range, which also includes morning suits from £140 and bridesmaids' accessories such as chiffon wraps from £39.

Kate Bostock, director of women's wear at M&S said "I think that offering dresses that are stylish and contemporary, very affordable and made to our high standards, means that women will feel confident choosing their dress at M&S."

Bridal lingerie is also available from the Truly You Collection, which has a selection of bras, basques, suspenders, thongs and French knickers.

M&S has also created a complementary collection of jewellery and accessories, including shoes, small clutch bags and a selection of wraps and cover ups for cooler days or evenings.

For the groom, morning suit jackets are available in herringbone and black with matching trousers in black or pinstripe, with brocade waistcoats and cravats in a selection of soft pastels.

Finally, to complete the bridal party M&S children’s wear features flower girls and page boys outfits. Dresses are in silk and lace with full net underlay skirts and matching beaded cardigans and shrugs in ivory and soft pink.

There are also shoes, tiaras and small bags. Pageboy outfits feature tail coats, suit jackets and smart trousers with jacquard waistcoats and cravats available in soft pink and cornflower blue.
