An innovative photographer who is pushing the boundaries with her unique interpretation of the Boudoir theme is Manchester based Julie Fortune. Take burlesque and boudoir, add a touch of erotica, move it a little towards the edge and you have The Black Book Sessions

Jules,
who has already made a name for herself with her
wedding photography and has recently obtained merit
awards for her fashion and beauty work says: “The
Black Book Sessions are an extension of my
glamour work, the difference being that I offer
sessions for guys and couples as well as females.
Another difference is that I offer what I term as 'Alternative'
shoots".
"My client base is very varied in age and background - from ladies who want a unique wedding day or anniversary present for their husband, to couples who desire something a bit raunchy for the bedroom!”
Addressing the reservations that many people have about this type of photography Julie says: “I have been shooting Glamour sessions for females for over 10 years and in that time have photographed clients of all shapes and sizes. I believe that we can all look amazing with hair and make up, good lighting, the right angles, and a photographer with creative ideas who can put you at ease!”
One of Julie's previous clients, Jodie, said: "The shoot with Jules was the first experience I've had in that sort of situation or environment and, on the whole, it was an extremely enjoyable and fun experience. Jules helped me feel completely relaxed and was very friendly and funny - which in turn helped me feel more confident for the shots. She advised me on which angles were best and which looks would achieve the better result".
Jules started The Black Book Sessions in response to the growing demand for this type of portrait photography.
Julie says: “This was purely as I felt there was a gap in the market for the type of individual who's interests and style were more burlesque, 50's, gothic and gay clubbing scene. Theses individuals tend to be very stylish and image conscious and love the idea of sensual, edgy photography which The Black Book Sessions provides. The feedback has been brilliant, with most clients saying it was great that they felt they could tailor their ideas for the shoot around there own style, rather than the photographer who may imposing the same look and feel for each client”.
Julie adds: “I feel very fortunate to be able to provide a service that is quite unique but I also love it with a passion!”
In terms of recommending the experience to other girls Jodie says: "I was very impressed with the finished product. The whole shoot was conducted in a very professional manner, but not to an extreme where it wasn't great fun. Jules herself is very professional yet approachable in terms of ideas and suggestions. She encouraged a great deal of input from me and my partner as to what we wanted to achieve from the photo session". "Overall - a fun and enjoyable day - I'd love to do it again!"
Tempted?
Based in Stafford, near Birmingham, Jo Doran of Tempted? has a fresh, vibrant approach to boudoir photography. Jo is one half of a husband and wife team J Doran Photography, who offer wedding & portrait photography.
As a female photographer, Jo recently started to specialise in this type of intimate portraiture. Jo says: “We were approached by a client who asked if we would take some seductive photographs of her as a surprise gift for her husband who was working overseas for six months. The whole shoot was a great success and the photographs were very well received! A colleague then found out we’d done this shoot, and asked us to do something similar for her. Tempted? has snowballed from there, and the demand for this style of photography has been amazing”.
Jo encapsulates the concept perfectly when she says: “Tempted? isn’t just for women who are stuck for an original wedding day present for their man. It’s for women who want to feel good about themselves, who want to look back on the photographs in years to come and think ‘wow – that’s really me!’

Judging by the comments received and the number of photographers who are now specialising in this type of work it would seem that we ladies in the UK are finally beginning to lose our inhibitions.
I have to admit that prior to looking into this subject a Boudoir Photo session is not something that I would ever have considered doing. But from talking to the number of specialists throughout the UK and seeing some of the wonderful work that they have produced with ladies of all ages and sizes, then I don't think I would hesitate to join the increasing number of ladies who have experienced this exciting and invigorating form of glamour photography.
